SCHOODIC POINT

Acadia National Park’s Eastern gem, Schoodic Peninsula, is one of those places, like Petit Manan or West Quoddy Head, known for rougher conditions as the tides and currents try to squirt around this headland that sticks out into the ocean. Also, access in this area is limited, which makes for longer days in an area with not a lot of options to get onto the land with limited drama.

We chose a shuttle trip from the Eastern side around the tip to the Western Side. We also chose a mild day with 5-10 kt winds and a small 1-foot swell at 6 seconds. And, even then, conditions at the point made for a rocky ride. I’ve also always found the bars off Spruce Point (on the Western side of the peninsula) to create rougher conditions, often times rougher than what can be found off Schoodic Head itself. Not too many photos on this day either. Once we were off the point, I wasn’t about to take a phone out. It was a “both hands on the paddle” moment. But I still managed to capture a few shots of the geometric rocks that line this area.
